Dr Svitlana Krakovska with a story "Voice for Ukraine" is listed among Nature's 10 people who helped shape science in 2022. It was mainly due to her active position at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine when she was the Head of the Ukrainian delegation to the IPCC session where in her passionate speech she stated a clear connection between the cause of climate change and war enablers via funding of the terrorist state due to “human sick dependency on fossil fuels” (Politico). It gained huge support worldwide and promoted an embargo on russian coal, oil and gas (Washington Post)
Dr Svitlana Krakovska holds a PhD in Geophysics and has more than 30 years of experience in meteorology, cloud and climate models, climate change mitigation and adaptation in all environmental sectors, particularly in Ukraine, but also regionally and globally. She has served as Vice National Focal Point of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to Ukraine since 2013. In the 6th Assessment Cycle of the IPCC, she was a Review Editor of the Special Report on Global Warming 1.5oC, Contributing Author to Summary for Policymakers IPCC WGI AR6, Leading Author of the Technical Summary, Chapter Atlas and Interactive Atlas of IPCC WGI AR6. In Feb 2021, by decree of the President of Ukraine, Dr Krakovska received the state award of the Order of Princess Olga of Third Class for her contribution to scientific activities in Antarctica and on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Ukrainian Antarctic Station "Akademik Vernadsky" where she overwintered in 1997/98.
Dr Svitlana Krakovska has been a member of the Taskforce Expert Group on Net Zero since 2024 which was established at COP28 in 2022 to further the aims of the UN High‑Level Expert Group on the Net Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities (HLEG).
