Dr. Ryan O’Shaughnessy serves as the Executive Director of the Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation, a role he assumed in 2023. With a lifelong passion for quail and bird dogs, Dr. O’Shaughnessy brings a unique blend of academic expertise, hands-on wildlife management experience, and a deep personal commitment to conserving Texas’ wild quail populations.
Dr. O’Shaughnessy holds a Ph.D. in Wildlife Management from Southern Illinois University and an MBA from Sul Ross State University. Before joining the Foundation, he served as an Assistant Professor at Sul Ross State University, where he also held the position of Interim Provost for Research.
In addition to his academic career, Dr. O’Shaughnessy has extensive experience in the field. Since 2014, he has owned and operated one of the largest wild quail hunting operations in Texas, earning the prestigious Orvis endorsement along the way. This background has allowed him to combine practical land and wildlife management knowledge with scientific research to advance sustainable quail conservation practices.
Dr. O’Shaughnessy’s passion for wild quail and the sporting traditions they support is the driving force behind his work at the Research Foundation. His goal is to ensure that Texas’ wild quail populations thrive, so future generations can experience the rich heritage of quail hunting and the camaraderie that comes with working bird dogs across the wide-open landscapes of the Rolling Plains.
