Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati, M.Sc., Ph.D. has been appointed as the Head of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics of the Republic of Indonesia since 2017, during her tenure, she successfully modernized the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System [INATEWS) and is currently leading its integration with the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System [MHEWS).
Prior to her current role, she served as President at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), one of the prominent and largest university in Indonesia with 55,000 students (2014-2017). She was also in charged as the Vice President of the International Consortium on Landslides (2015-2019). Furthermore, she has been elected as the Chair of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group of Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System of IOC UNESCO for two successive periods (2019-2022 and 2022-2024). Now, she has been very active as the Executive Council Member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) since 2019, and has been appointed as the Steering Committee Member of the Global Ocean Observing System [GOOS) since 2021. GOOS, led by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, provides sustained ocean observations, data, and services for climate monitoring, marine ecosystem health, and disaster risk reduction. Prof. Dwikorita’s involvement reflects her dedication to advancing global collaboration in ocean observation and addressing climate and disaster challenges.
She is also a member of the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) Executive Council Climate and Disaster Panel (EC CDP), which focuses on addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change and disaster risk reduction. The panel provides strategic guidance on policies, programs, and collaborative efforts to enhance climate resilience and improve early warning systems for disasters worldwide. Prof. Dwikorita’s role in the EC CDP highlights her expertise in integrating climate science and disaster risk management, as well as her commitment to strengthening global frameworks for reducing the impacts of climate-related hazards on vulnerable communities.
