Dr. Julie Pullen is an influential earth system scientist and climate tech investor. She has been a naval oceanographer and engineering professor and has held leadership roles in non-profits, government, the private sector, and scientific societies. Her expertise spans science, business, and security.
A former Fulbright Visiting Professor in the Philippines, Dr. Pullen was named a Fellow of the Explorers Club for her international fieldwork studying the air and sea. She was a prestigious Marie Tharp Fellow at Columbia’s Earth Institute and has authored over 50
peer-reviewed scientific papers on how the ocean and atmosphere communicate. An expert in nonlinear dynamics and complex systems, she builds earth system models to predict future patterns using AI fused with data.
Dr. Pullen was a Founding Partner at Propeller Ventures, a venture capital fund investing in ocean-based climate solutions, and advises early-stage climate tech funds. She was a leader at the pioneering climate risk startup Jupiter Intelligence and is on the Global Association of Risk Professionals advisory board.
She previously helmed the Department of Homeland Security’s National Maritime Security Center and was a Science Fellow at Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation. She is a Congressionally-mandated U.S. Climate Security Roundtable member and has held appointments at two Department of Energy national labs.
Dr. Pullen was named one of the thirteen Influential Climate Leaders of 2024 by Bloomberg and profiled in Businessweek. Her writing has appeared in Scientific American and the Economist, and she has been featured on numerous podcasts and at national and international science, security, business, and tech conferences. She is the main scientist in the 2024 film Earth Protectors, which streams globally on Prime Video and AppleTV+.
Dr. Pullen has served on U.S. National Academy of Sciences committees on ocean observations and earth system prediction and peer-reviewed the two most recent U.S. National Climate Assessments. She was elected to top leadership roles in the Oceanography Society and the American Meteorological Society, which publish the disciplines’ leading journals and have membership in the tens of thousands, and co-chaired their annual conferences.
Dr. Pullen holds a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from Oregon State University and a master’s in Applied Mathematics from the University of Arizona. A graduate of Macalester College (majoring in math and physics), she was the first undergraduate intern at the Santa Fe Institute, where she worked with evolutionary biologist Stuart Kauffman.
