Dr. Swadhin Kumar Behera is a prominent researcher in the field of global ocean and climate science, particularly renowned for his contributions to the understanding of tropical and extratropical climate variations, including the Indian Ocean Dipole and the Indian Ocean Subtropical Dipole. After obtaining a Ph.D. from India and working for approximately ten years at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, he relocated to the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science Technology (JAMSTEC) in 1998. Subsequently, he has been affiliated with numerous centers and programs at JAMSTEC, currently serving as the head of the Application Laboratory. Concurrently, he serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Ocean Technology, Policy, and Environment at the University of Tokyo and as a visiting professor in NEKKEN of Nagasaki University. He served as a member of the WCRP/CLIVAR Seasonal to Interannual Climate Prediction Panel and is currently serving as co-chair of the UN Ocean Decade Digital Twins of the Ocean (DITTO) program. He is also a VAIBHAV Fellow, confered by the Government of India and is elected as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2024 for his breakthrough discovery of Indian Ocean subtropical dipole and clarifying fundamental characteristics of global climate phenomena.
